The Phantasmagoria of Philippine Sports Politics

Arroyo wants early Olympic buildup

MANILA, Philippines—Money won’t be a problem as long as there is a sound sports development program.

The assurance came from President Macapagal-Arroyo during the courtesy call made by the winning wushu team in MalacaƱang Friday, according to Philippine Sports Commission chair Butch Ramirez and Beijing RP delegation chief of mission Rep. Monico Puentevella.

The wushu team finished with one gold, one silver and two bronze medals in a sport that was held as an exhibition event during the last Olympics in Beijing.

The 15 RP athletes who competed in eight regular Olympic sports failed to even win just once in their respective events.

The two top Philippine officials said the Chief Executive has given them instructions to start preparing for the 2012 London Games, beginning with the Laos Southeast Asian Games next year.

“She gave instructions to begin the preparation for the London Games,” said Puentevella, who is also weightlifting association chief and vice president of the Philippine Olympic Committee.

“She wants a better showing starting with the SEA Games next year,” added Ramirez.

The Philippines finished a record low of sixth place last year in Thailand, two years after taking the overall title in the 2005 Philippine edition.

Ramirez said that by October, young athletes in boxing, taekwondo, swimming, diving, shooting, judo, weightlifting, table tennis, badminton and wrestling will be sent abroad to train.

Some 15 young boxers will be brought to Cuba for intensive training, while jins will train in Korea. The rest of the athletes in the 10 “focus sports” will also be sent abroad depending on their national sports associations’ recommendations.

Puentevella said there won’t be any conflict with the Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation with regard to the computation of revenue that should go to the PSC.

“As far as Pagcor is concerned, it is willing to follow the law,” said Puentevella.

POINTS TO CONSIDER:

Money won’t be a problem as long as there is a sound sports development program.

It is a century old issue, why is it only now that the Malacanang noticed it? For how many years the president occupies the executive seat she didn't mention anything about "sports development program"? or rather the real issue is, she has no time to listen to the demands of the Phil. Sports Commission for a "sports development program" and of course the "budget or monetary concerns attached to it", because she is busy with some "important" fraudulent acts!
Same with other government officials, especially in the Senate and Congress, they have the power to listen to the Sports Commission's needs and priorities, and perceive things in relation to it, but they are so busy with destroying each other and building up their images and political ambitions.

“As far as Pagcor is concerned, it is willing to follow the law,” said Puentevella.

"willing": offered voluntarily: offered or given by somebody readily and enthusiastically.

"willing"? willing!? this word should not be uttered by a government agency! A government agency which was created in accordance with the law, with Democracy, with the GOVERNment. They must not just "willing" to abide the law, they SURELY abide the law, they eat the law, wear the law, sleep with the law and live with the law; and with these, there is a certainty in their actions, it is possible that we have won a medal, no late reaction about the "sports development programs", no such issues!
This truth is not solely a government concern but also the concern of everything under the scope of the Democratic Philippines, in short, including the Filipino citizenry.

... I am hoping for a future for our Olympiads.
